OpenShift gets prestigious Technology of The Year award and it is recognized as one of the year's best tools and technologies for developers, IT professionals, and businesses. Red Hat's platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offering, has received InfoWorld's 2015 Technology of the Year award.
The annual awards identify the best and most innovative products in the IT landscape, selected by InfoWorld Test Center editors and reviewers. Winners are drawn from all of the products tested by InfoWorld during the past year.
OpenShift was the only PaaS offering - and one of the only open source offerings - to receive the award, emerging as the top PaaS offering in InfoWorld's testing. InfoWorld lauded OpenShift for its ability to support high application densities and standard continuous integration.
What is OpenShift
OpenShift is Red Hat's Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) that allows developers to quickly develop, host, and scale applications in a cloud environment. With OpenShift you have choice of offerings, including online, on premise, and open source project options.
OpenShift Origin includes support for a wide variety of language runtimes and data layers including Java EE6, Ruby, PHP, Python, Perl, MongoDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.
OpenShift 3 is built around a core of application containers powered by Docker, with orchestration and management provided by Kubernetes, on a foundation of Atomic and Enterprise Linux. Origin Milestone 5 (M5) is the upstream community project that brings it all together along with extensions, to accelerate application development and deployment.
The easiest way to run OpenShift Origin locally is to download an image suitable for running on a VM. The image will work on KVM , VirtualBox or VMWare.
You can also build your own machine using Puppet or follow the comprehensive guide and deploy OpenShift Origin manually.

Gartner's proprietary Vendor Financial Rating measures companies against various distinct financial ratios. Red Hat saw
- revenue grow 17% for the trailing twelve month (TTM) period
- the company actually saw revenue growth accelerate (to 19%) year over year
- its TTM net profit margin of 11% also earns high praise
- increased investment in research and development (R&D)
- strong TTM cash flow from operations to revenue ratio, 33%,
- however, this is negatively impacted by the large amount of deferred revenue in current liabilities
So the company enjoys double digit revenue growth and profit margins while displaying a very strong ability to generate cash and increase R&D investment.
